One writer's search for healing led to the sea. These coastal retreats are redefining what that means.
On December 14, 2021, surgeons removed ten centimeters of cancerous tissue from my right breast. Six weeks of radiation shrank that breast further, sharpening the scar. Embarrassed by the lopsided appearance, I stuffed padding into my bra, like a 13-year-old waiting to hit puberty, and counted the days until I could schedule reconstructive surgery. I avoided mirrors, buried myself under loose clothing, and let feelings of inadequacy seep into my everyday life.
On March 11, 2024, I sat across from a plastic surgeon, eager to hear how he could make my breast whole again. After extensive measurements and prodding, he laid out the options: two surgeries, significant recovery time, and still, the telltale scar. I left two days later for Costalegre, Mexico, with a prosthetic in tow and a heavy heart.
The fourth door
On March 18, 2024, I pushed through the jungle to the temazcal at Four Seasons Resort Tamarindo for a spiritual cleansing. Yazmin Tellez, our shaman, and Jorge Echenique, the Águila de Fuego, guided four other participants and me through a prayer ritual before we entered the sweat lodge.
What followed, two hours of sweating, chanting, and primal screams, brought me to a kind of clarity about my body I had never touched before. Screaming at the fourth door, the final phase of the ceremony, until my voice gave out, I understood: I didn't want more surgeries to carve myself into a socially acceptable shape. I didn't want to cut anything else out.
I wanted to claim my scar and my lopsided breasts for what they had always been: symbols of survival.
That temazcal cracked something open in me, and coastal resorts around the world are beginning to understand that kind of deeper healing. From the cliffs of Portugal to the atolls of the Maldives, a new wave of beachfront properties is expanding what it can mean to heal by the sea.

Elounda Beach Hotel & Villas — Crete, Greece
This 40-acre property on the Cretan coast goes well beyond a standard spa menu, with hydro-biontology that alternates water pressure and temperature to stimulate the circulatory and lymphatic systems, plus Bio-Energetic Check-Ups and targeted therapies including abdominal lymphatic massage.
